Riding the Rails with the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

My husband and I used to live in LaFayette, Georgia. I love this small town and cherish memories of our time there. One of my favorite parts of living in LaFayette was hearing the steam trains come through on Saturdays. Better yet was to be able to see them rolling through town as part of their tour through the countryside. When there were special engines pulling the passenger cars, there would be people and photographers lined up along the tracks waiting to see these majestic pieces of history roll through town.

As the trains roll through town, they bring with them a sense of excitement and anticipation that is palpable. And let’s not forget the sound! As the steam engines approach, their horns let out a unique resounding blast, echoing through the town.

But here’s the best part: we don’t have to be just bystanders in this spectacle; we can be active participants too! Thanks to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, we have the opportunity to hop aboard those steam trains and embark on an unforgettable journey through the breathtaking countryside. It’s a chance to experience the beauty of our surroundings in a whole new way.

As you embark on your journey, you’ll witness breathtaking vistas, pass through charming towns, and cross towering trestles that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. The TVR fleet offers a variety of themed rides throughout the year, from fall foliage tours to special holiday trips, ensuring there’s always an occasion to hop on board.

In addition to the scenic rides, the TVR also hosts a range of events and activities for the whole family. From train-themed festivals and seasonal celebrations to interactive exhibits and educational programs, there’s never a dull moment when it comes to the Tennessee Valley Railroad experience.

Located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the museum is a treasure trove for train enthusiasts, history buffs, and curious visitors alike. In addition to the steam engines, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum also features diesel locomotives and other vintage rail cars. These vehicles provide a fascinating contrast and allow visitors to appreciate the advancements in railroad technology over the years.

While the Summerville Steam Trips are currently unavailable due to ongoing track improvements, there are still plenty of other rail tours to experience. I’m biased, but I would highly recommend either the Copperhill Special or the Hiwassee Loop! Take the day and enjoy the sights and sounds of traveling the rails through the stunning countryside.
